IcedTea is derived from Sun's source. And I realize that gcj is not Sun software. It's currently just the shim to launch the JVM.
That is a very,very small part of running an applet on a 64bit system.

Totally different than say nspluginwrapper for 32bit flash.

I have no idea why this is so difficult on gentoo. It's easy on Ubuntu and Fedora.

My problem with your post is that you're comparing apples to oranges. Sun open sourced their software stack including the hotspot JVM and thousands of libraries. IcedTea, and later OpenJDK just fill in the gaps that Sun wasn't able to release because of third party components that they didn't hold rights to.

What has Adobe done beside release buggy, 32bit-only binaries?

NB. "[Installing IcedTea on a Gentoo system] requires the use of portage overlays. It may also require an upgrade to gcc which can easily break your system. Please only attempt this if you are comfortable with your system and prepared to suffer the consequences if it breaks."

@Linux User

IcedTea is not a Sun product, in fact it was started by Red Hat in order to "make the OpenJDK software which Sun Microsystems released as free software in 2007 usable without requiring any other software that is not free software."

Thus Sun does not, and has made no commitment to, release a 64-bit browser plug-in, just as I said in my post. I never claimed that it was impossible to get Java to work on a 64-bit system, I have done so myself on my Gentoo install.
