Canonical have just officially released the first beta of Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. This new version of Ubuntu comes with a slew of improvements over 8.04, which was released back in April this year.
Codenamed “Intrepid Ibex”, 8.10 continues Ubuntu’s
proud tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source
technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.
Featured improvements include:
- GNOME 2.24
- X.Org 7.4
- Linux kernel 2.6.27
- An Encrypted private directory
- Guest sessions
- Network Manager 0.7
- A “Last successful boot” recovery entry
- Samba 3.2
- PAM authentication framework
- A Totem BBC plugin
The CD image is Available for download from Canonical’s mirrors, but please keep in mind that this is a beta release, and as such it is not intended for production use. Most of you will have heard that the earlier Alpha 6 release had a major problem with some Intel GigE hardware using the new e1000 driver.
I’ll be testing this in VirtualBox, and will be back with screenshots and so forth soon.
